Over Poker is an online video poker variant from the stable of the online casino software provider Cryptologic. It can be played at online casinos like InterCasino. At first appearance it looks a bit like the Level Up video poker games from Microgaming. But it is structured differently and is more exciting and interactive. Over Poker also introduces new elements of strategy and makes players think a bit more.

Over Poker is different from the regular video poker variants right from the start. Only two cards are dealt face up in the beginning instead of five. For each card the player has three options. The player can discard a card, in which event it is immediately replaced. The player can shift the card upward to a higher level. However, players must be careful in exercising this option because whenever a new level is started a fresh bet has to be placed. The new level is treated as an independent hand. When the card is shifted upward it is replaced by another card at the lower level. The player can hold the card, in which case there is no action. These options are not available for the replacement cards.

After the player acts on the two cards, the remaining three cards are dealt one at a time. The same three options will apply to these cards. Once the lowest playing level has five cards on which the player has acted then that hand is complete. It is compared with the payout table and payouts made if applicable. If a new level has been started by the player the video poker game shifts to that level and is played in a similar manner. If there is no new level then the game is over.

The payouts begin with jacks or better but the payouts are lower than in the normal Jacks or Better video poker variant. This is because Cryptologic Over Poker offers an advantage to the player in the manner the game is structured. This has to be compensated by lower payouts. In Over Poker three of a kind pays out at 2 to 1 as against 3 to 1 in Jacks or Better; flush pays 5 to 1 in Over Poker as against 6 to 1 in Jacks or Better; full house pays 5 to 1 in Over Poker as against 9 to 1 in Jacks or Better and four of a kind pays 20 to 1 in Over Poker as against 25 to 1 in Jacks or Better.

In Cryptologic Over Poker, players can wager only one coin per game and the coin size varies from 0.25 credits to 100.00 credits. The game is visually more appealing. Players can choose from three skins that set up the background on the screen. The first skin gives the appearance of army camouflage fatigues, the second skin gives a metallic fabrication appearance and the third skin gives an elegant wooden display. Sometimes new players who lack familiarity with poker cannot relate the names of hand rankings to the cards. In Over Poker, players can move the cursor over the hand rankings in the payout table to see a display of the corresponding poker hand. The usual customization options that Cryptologic offers have been incorporated.
